Utah Statewide Immunization Information System (USIIS)

Each year the Utah Immunization Program conducts statewide immunization assessments among two-year-old children in each of the local health department clinics. Site visits and immunization assessments of private providers enrolled in the Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program are also conducted. This data is used to determine current immunization levels, assist public and private immunization providers improve their delivery of immunization services, and subsequently, prevent vaccine preventable disease outbreaks.

Coverage levels are determined by assessing the basic childhood immunization series, commonly referred to as the 4:3:1:3:3:1 series:
4 DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis), 3 Polio, 1 MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), 3 Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b), 3 Hepatitis B vaccines, and 1 Chickenpox vaccine.

The Utah Immunization Program uses a computer software program called CoCASA (Comprehensive Clinic Assessment Software Application) to determine immunization levels. The CoCASA software is available free of charge from the National Immunization Program and is available to conduct self-assessments.

During 2006, 69% of Utah's two-year-old children in public clinics were adequately immunized. Assessments conducted in private Vaccines for Children (VFC) provider clinics revealed that only 48% of two-year-old children were up-to-date.

National childhood immunization coverage levels in 2006 revealed that 78% of the nation’s two-year-old children receiving the 4:3:1:3:3:1 series.

The Utah Immunization Program, along with public and private immunization providers, will continue to monitor immunization levels in Utah's children and implement strategies to help improve them.
