1“The term HCP refers to all paid and unpaid persons working in health care settings who have the potential for exposure to infectious materials, including body substances, contaminated medical supplies and equipment, contaminated environmental surfaces, or contaminated air. Health Care Personnel (HCP) might include (but are not limited to) physicians, nurses, nursing assistants, therapists, technicians, emergency medical service personnel, dental personnel, pharmacists, laboratory personnel, autopsy personnel, students and trainees, contractual staff not employed by the health care facility, and persons (e.g., clerical, dietary, housekeeping, maintenance, and volunteers) not directly involved in patient care but potentially exposed to infectious agents that can be transmitted to and from HCP.
The recommendations apply to HCP in acute care hospitals, nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities, physician’s offices, urgent care centers, outpatient clinics, and to persons who provide home health care and emergency medical services.” Influenza Vaccination of Health-Care Personnel (MMWR 2006;55:1)

2“During 1989-2003, HCP vaccination coverage levels in the United States increased substantially, from 10% to 40%; however, coverage levels have remained relatively constant since 1997…..Substantially lower vaccination rates have been reported among HCP who have contact with certain populations at high risk. In addition, HCP vaccination coverage varies by level and years of training, age, occupational group, and facility type.” Influenza Vaccination of Health-Care Personnel (MMWR 2006;55:4)

3Utah hospitals were surveyed by the Utah Immunization Program in 2002 and 2004. This rate is based on the ratio of the total number of employees to the number of vaccinated employees.

4Percentage is taken from the ratio of total employees to the number of vaccinated employees as reported in the Immunization Report for Long Term Care Facilities in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Reporting began in 2003.

5Percentage changed from the Immunization Report for Long Term Care Facilities 2005 due to updated national immunization coverage data cited in Prevention and Control of Influenza (MMWR 2007;55:10). The new coverage rate is cited from an unpublished study of the 2004 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) analyzed in 2006 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that was published in 2007. The data indicate a 42% influenza vaccination coverage level among HCP in 2004. This remains the most current national
rate available.
