Regional Coalitions

In conjunction with the statewide Every Child By Two (ECBT) Immunization Coalition, regional coalitions work at the grass roots level to address immunization issues. Their missions coincide with the statewide statewide ECBT Coalition's mission to implement strategies that increase immunization levels among children two years of age and under. Activities focus on the specific regions represented in the Coalitions.

The Northern Utah Every Child by Two Immunization Coalition
Greater Salt Lake Immunization Coalition
Southwest Immunization Coalition for Children
Utah County Immunization Coalition

The Northern Utah Every Child by Two Immunization Coalition
The Northern Utah Every Child by Two Immunization Coalition was formed in 1993 to address the low immunization among two-year-olds in the northern counties of Weber, Morgan, and Davis. The Coalition's mission is to promote early childhood immunizations and educate the community through effective action and leadership. It is comprised of a chairpers on and individuals representing county/city schools, pediatrician's offices, child care centers, the Ogden Junior League, the PTA, the local health department and the local hospital.

Strategies Implemented by the Northern Utah Every Child by Two Coalition include:

  • Two statewide Every Child by Two immunization conferences in October, 1993 and 1995. The conferences were organized, planned, and implemented by members of the Coalition and primarily the Ogden Junior League. The conferences were coordinated with the statewide Every Child by Two Immunization Coalition and the Utah Immunization Program. Rosalynn Carter and Betty Bumpers attended both conferences and were keynote speakers.
  • A school based immunization clinic. The Coalition in conjunction with a Community Health Center and volunteers from the PTA and Ogden City Schools implemented the immunization clinic at an elementary school in a low income area of Ogden City in 1996. This area of the city was also identified as having low immunization levels.
  • Support of National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW). Activities include: annual conference for immunization providers, awards and recognition to key immunization providers throughout the Coalition region, participating in a Parent Education Night at a local school and coordinating a physician's dinner for local pediatricians.
  • Collaborated with the USIIS in a community outreach project to promote USIIS in private provider clinics.

Greater Salt Lake Immunization Coalition
The Greater Salt Lake Immunization Coalition was organized at the end of 1994 by the Salt Lake Valley Health Department and the United Way in response to low immunization levels in the county. The Coalition became operational in 1995. The membership is comprised of individuals representing community and volunteer agencies, church organizations, a children's hospital, a managed care organization, pharmaceutical organizations, the Association for Utah Community Health Centers, the Salt Lake Valley Health Department and the Utah Immunization Program.

The Coalition's mission is to work as a community coalition and to actively participate in raising immunization awareness and immunization levels of toddlers.

Strategies Implemented by the Greater Salt Lake Immunization Coalition include:

  • An immunization clinic day at Utah's Hogle Zoo.
  • Support of National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW). The Coalition coordinated special immunization clinics with the Salt Lake Community Health Centers.
  • Coalition re-organization and prioritization of immunization projects.
  • Development of a logo to help promote awareness of the Coalition.
  • Support of the county and state health department with on-going immunization educational efforts and activities for the general public and private providers such as participating in community health fairs, immunization training for health care providers, conferences targeted to the medical community, the statewide media campaign, and the Utah Statewide Immunization Information System (USIIS).
  • Development and distribution of a flip chart illustrating vaccine preventable diseases.
  • Parent education at the South Towne Expo Center with keynote speaker, Dr. Peter Moskowitz, and at the E-Center with Dr. Richard Haupt.
  • Collaboration with the USIIS and the University of Utah in an outreach pilot project to establish a community model of enrolling providers in USIIS and develop a preceptorship program for University of Utah pharmacy and public health students.
  • Other projects include the development of a Legislative Fact Sheet on current immunization issues and collaborating with Intermountain Health Care to conduct an immunization survey in InstaCare Centers in Salt Lake County.

Southwest Immunization Coalition for Children
The Southwest Immunization Coalition for Children (SWICC) is a regional coalition dedicated to protecting the health of children through immunizations in Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Kane and Washington counties. Founded in January 2006, SWICC is a nonprofit partnership of state and local health departments, Washington County School District, Dixie State College, primary care providers and vaccine representatives. The Coalition was created to address the low immunization rates among two-year olds in Southwestern region of Utah.

Strategies Implemented by the Southwest Immunization Coalition for Children:

  • Promote national immunization recommendations through educational campaigns that targets parents, the public, and immunization providers.
  • Collaborated with the Centers for Disease Control in the 2006 National Infant Immunization Week campaign to host a press event and provider education luncheon with Dr. Melinda Wharton from the National Immunization Program at CDC.
  • Conduct immunization assessments to determine immunization rates in order to focus coalition activities in areas of greatest need.
  • Assess immunization exemption rates and implement educational materials that will be provided to parents seeking exemptions.
  • Raise community awareness through immunization activities and media campaigns.
  • Collaborate with the Utah Statewide Immunization Information System (USIIS) to support an immunization database that allows for statewide immunization record keeping.
  • Develop and distribute educational materials for health care providers, depicting the effects of vaccine preventable diseases.
  • Increase access to complete immunization records for providers through collaboration with USIIS and organize regional USIIS user group trainings.

Utah County Immunization Coalition
The goal of the Utah County Immunization Coalition is to implement programs that will decrease communicable diseases by increasing timely vaccinations among Utah County infants, children, and adolescents. The Coalition was organized in 2006 and is comprised of public and private organizations dedicated to increasing the number of adequately immunized infants, children, and adolescents and addressing parental concerns in Utah County.

Strategies Implemented by the Utah County Immunization Coalition:

  • Partnered with Utah Department of Health to conduct research on reasons why parents exempt children from receiving vaccinations.
  • Partnered with Brigham Young University to conduct research on reasons why parents hesitate in having children immunized.
  • Partnered with Safe Kids Coalition and Utah County Health Department to disseminate immunization information with car seat safety checks.
  • Encourages use of Utah Statewide Immunization Information System (USIIS) by local physician offices.
